Mansaku & Mansai. That’s Kyogen

Interactive DVD-ROM and DVD-Video, 2001.

with Chris Ziegler and Andreas Kratky.

The DVD project Mansaku & Mansai. That’s Kyogen was created as a digital archive to preserve, learn and study in-depth the style of the traditional Japanese Kyogen theater. The DVD-ROM with its clearly structured menu navigation offers the user a selection of chapters on theory and practice that cover the entire spectrum of the Kyogen theater in a direct and lively presentation. It also includes video clips with excerpts from the most important Kyogen pieces, selected and performed by Nomura Mansaku, the great master of the Kyogen and most famous actor in the field. In short workshop sequences, his son Nomura Mansai illustrates and explains themes such as the stage, characters, costumes and masks, instruments, movement sequences and sequences of steps, vocal means of expression etc.
The DVD-ROM is complemented by four video DVDs documenting thirteen of the most important full-length Kyogen plays.
