William Forsythe. Improvisation Technologies
Volker Kuchelmeister, Chris Ziegler, Nick Haffner, 1994-2011
Interactive installation, interactive CD-ROM and dance film
The multi award-winning work Improvisation Technologies, a
collaboration with William Forsythe, artistic director of the Frankfurt
Ballet from 1984-2004, is considered a reference project amongst dance
professionals, dance conservatories and educators. The project was published,
now in its 3rd edition (Oct 2011), as Book with interactive CD-ROM by ZKM
Karlsruhe and publisher Hate & Cantz and exhibited more then 90 times
around the world. In 2011 the Forsythe Company commissioned Kuchelmeister
and Ziegler to create the revised version Lectures from Improvisation Technologies,
which is currently (as of October 2011) exhibited at the Centre Pompidou
Paris and the Institute of
Contemporary Art Boston.

Juxtapositions
Stereoscopic Panoramic Installation, 2011
Stereoscopic 3D panoramas, captured in the Tasmanian wilderness are juxtaposed
with scenes of extreme urban development in Hong Kong. The contact points are
shaped as seamless transitions, disclosing unusual perspectives between both
extremes. The work consist of a 80k pixel wide stereoscopic panorama constructed
from 21 separate scenes and on location sound recordings.

3D User Interface for Spherical and Fisheye
Representations
Prototype, 2011
The Sphere Player is a flexible framework to navigate in and display wide field
of view video recordings such as 180 degree fisheye or 360 degree spherical.
It consists of a dynamic on-screen selection page and a user interface. The
user can can zoom and freely navigate within the video by changing his point
of view.

Deconstructing Double District II Research project - visualisation and image processing, 2010
This work explores interactive stereoscopic 3D scanline visualisation applied to a dancer's body in motion. The result is a ever evolving abstract shape or form controlled by a simple user interface. Visualisation is done in realtime and stereoscopic 3D.

Fragmentation with Robert Lepage Multi channel stereoscopic video installation, 2011
Lipsynch (2007) is a theatre play by director Robert Lepage with a multi layered narrative structure. A single scene, 12 minutes long, was chosen to create a stereoscopic multi-perspective video installation for the RE-ACTOR environment. Multi-perspective visualisation constitutes a novel method of documenting the entireness of an event, by recording from multiple points of view. In combination with stereoscopic imaging, it captures two modalities of three-dimensional representation, perspective and depth. These modalities are then applied for display in a hexagonal stereoscopic multi-screen projection environment, the RE-ACTOR platform.

Stereoscopic multi-perspective capture and volumetric
scene reconstruction.
Research project, interactive visualisation, 2009
This project combines multi-perspective stereoscopic video capture with volumetric
scene reconstruction to demonstrate a novel method of documenting dance. The
process of deconstruction and subsequent remodelling of the dancer's body in
motion results in a fragmentation of the body into discrete volumes that are
visualised within a computer graphic application. The fidelity and high level
of detail in the video imagery is augmented and completed with the 3D voxel representation.
By doing so it is possible to bypass the point-of-view restriction of traditional
video/film recording, space and linear time become variable properties and multi-dimensional
visualisation becomes reality. This process is utilised to create an abstract
representation and depiction of the dance performance in form of a real-time
3D interactive installation and a filmic work.

Conversations @ the Studio
Interactive Immersive Installation, 2005
Conversations@the Studio presents an innovative mixed-reality narrative model of the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Decorative Arts collection within a uniquely designed Intelligent Interactive Information Environment. It takes the natural navigation of a real world situation – a contemporary Glass Studio - as its point of departure, using this as a framework for organizing a set of narrative formations that further elaborate the thematics of the collection. By visualising a 360 degree global video recording, made on location at the Glass Studio, it provides the telepresent experience of an actual visit to the Studio, giving full interactive freedom to the viewer's gaze.
